Stomach and
spleen torsion Ostara
(Gastric Dilatation and Volvulus or BLOAT)
Thursday
evening October 25th we got serious alarmed. Ostara went
all of a sudden to the scullery and became very restless and started
to dribble. As most Great Dane lovers do, we were alarmed
immediately, because this a typical symptom of a torsion of the
stomach! So we did not hesitate and called directly the veterinary
surgeon.
Underway,
you still hopes that your diagnostic is wrong and that it is
something else. But unfortunately my presumption was correct and the
diagnostic of the Vet was even worse. It was a torsion of the
stomach and the spleen. The Vet did not hesitate and immediately
started a surgery. At 00:30 we received the releasing phone call
that our little girl survived the surgery. Her Stomach was been
twisted 360 degrees and her spleen 180 degrees. The stomach has been
fixated and the spleen had to be removed. Everything went under the
circumstances good and late Friday we could come and get her home.
During the
night she was a bit restless but no further problems. Saturday
evening she had very bad pains and she got an injection with a
painkiller for it. This helped almost immediately. Of course she was
still very restless, but what would you expect after such a surgery.
Sunday
morning at 7 o'clock panic again. Ostara had vomited. Again we
rushed to the clinic, where she got something against sickness. It
helped only for a short period. So again after a couple of hours we
ringed the Vet. This time X-ray pictures were made, indicating that
the stomach was fortunately OK, but here intestines were not working
properly. Our little girl had to stay in the clinic. We were a bit
disappointed, but at the other hand it gave us also a safe feeling,
that she was in good hands.
Monday late
afternoon we were allowed to bring her back home. She was visually
improved and looked happy, although she had not eaten yet, despite
of the attempts of the Vet. Typical Great Dane behaviour even if you
are ill you have to show your character. At home is was clear that
she really was hungry, she went to the barge and looked down to it,
the porridge was all of a sudden very tasteful. Later that day a
large pile of shit outside and it sounds silly but you really can be
glad with a simple mount shit! During the night she snored very
relaxed. She had even again that naughty look back!
At last it
looks like she is really recovering and we are convinced that she
will We are convinced that the deep valley has been passed and that
she will be soon on the top again. It was a nightmare for all of us.
We are very
thankful for the dedication of ‘Dierenkliniek-Enkhuizen’, by there
fast reactions we luckily still have our baby.
The first 3
weeks she have to act very quietly, therefore our frequent visitors
of the site will be seeing less regular updates. We hope in the
future be able to again show lots of pictures of our little jolly
jumper…..
